Boljoon, Cebu

Boljoon (also Boljo -one) is a Philippine municipality in the province of Cebu.

Geography

Boljoon is adjacent to Alcoy in the north, Oslob in the south, Malabuyoc in the West. To the east is the road of Cebu and the island of Bohol.

Boljoon is politically divided into eleven barangays. Of these, six, including Poblacion ( the main village ) on the coast, the others are at home.

History

Boljoon is one of the oldest town in Cebu. However, the exact founding date is disputed. According to the local historian Marin Morales Bolijoon the place in 1600 and the church was founded a year later. According to a document, which is preserved in the Archives of the Augustinian Province ( " archives of the Augustinian Province" ), the town was officially founded in 1692 ( during the Spanish rule, the terms " city " and were " community " often used interchangeably ).

Church of Boljoon

The church of Boljoon was built in the rococo style. It contains old and elaborate carvings and bas-reliefs. The interior is beautifully decorated. 28 two meter thick columns of mortar and limestone which also carry two meters thick walls.

The church of Boljoon is the oldest surviving original stone church in Cebu. In 1999, the church was declared by the National Historical Institute of the Philippines to the " National Historical Landmark " (Eng. "National Historic Landmark " ), in the following year declared the National Museum of the Philippines, the Church of the " National Cultural Treasure " (Eng. " National Cultural treasure "). It stands on the Vorchlagsliste the Philippines to hold a World Heritage Site by UNESCO as one of the baroque churches in the Philippines since 2006.

Economy

The economic activities are concentrated in the capital ( Poblacion ). Fishing and agriculture are the main industries.
