Bölkow Phoebus

The Phoebus ( after the Greek god of light Apollo ) is a single-seat glider Bölkow GmbH.

History

The design was based on experience, on the previous Phoenix ( the first aircraft in plastic construction ) are based, developed. The aircraft's first flight took place on 11 April 1964 and on 17 February 1966, received its type certification. A total of 254 pieces (of which 133 in C version ) built in the period 1964-1970. The price for a Phoebus amounted in 1968 to about 20,000 DM

Construction

The constructed by Richard Eppler, Hermann Naegele and Rudolf Lindner glider was the first, which was built of fiber composite materials in Laupheim in series. Fuselage and wings are of sandwich construction, with balsa wood was used as a core material and fiberglass as the top layer.

Versions

The end up with 1 (A1, B1, C1) Named Releases are respectively the serial versions.

  • Phoebus A first version with 15 m span and a fixed undercarriage (Rudolf Lindner was so 1966 German masters of the default class )
  • Phoebus B version with retractable landing gear (1969 B2 with improved aerodynamics, B3 version with modified profile and other control)
  • Phoebus C 1967 version with retractable landing gear and 17 m span ( Goran Ax was so 1968 Vice World Champion in the open class ), ( C2 version with weight-saving measures)
  • Phoebus M, planned motor glider version ( with 16- kW motor -Lloyd )
