Bolmen

Internal Bolmsö, drinking water supply

The Bolmen is the largest lake in the western part of Småland in Sweden and the tenth largest lake in Sweden. It is located about 80 kilometers south of Jönköping.

The name comes from the Old Swedish Bolmen ( Fornsvenska ) and is dated to the year 1689. He was then " Bollmen Lacus ", which means as much as " Great Lake " ( large lake ).

The lake has many islands - according to a legend, there are 365 - of which Bolmsö is the largest in the lake. Furthermore, until 1932 the uncharted archipelago of Tira Islands is in the lake.

The Bolmen partly belongs to the municipality of Ljungby, but parts of the lake are also among the communities Hylte and Värnamo.

The lake supplies drinking water for several cities in southern Sweden, Lund et al. The water is passed through the Bolmentunnel up to Skåne. The natural outlet of the lake is the river Bolmån, which in turn is the largest tributary of the River Lagan.

At the southern end of the Bolmen was in the 13th century, the castle Piksborg. The plant is also still visible, but the buildings no longer exist because they were built of wood. In Piksborg also crosses the bike path " Banvallsleden " the Holmen.

In Bolmen 24 species of fish. Among other things, there are walleye, pike, perch, eel, bream ( bream ), tench, rudd, roach, burbot, salmon, salmon trout.
