Origin & History

The Bolognese ( Bolognese Bichon ) is the Bichon Italy and is a breed of dog that in the Italian city of Bologna was predominantly native, but not originally came from there. He was probably brought by sailors from the Balearic Islands in the city and was widespread during the Renaissance in France and Italy. Its origins merge with those of Maltesers, because as his ancestors, the same small dogs that Aristotle ( 384-322 BC) are mentioned among the Latin term canes melitenses. Already known in Roman times, was one of the Bolognese especially to those highly valued gifts that the powerful of the world were wont to do during an entire epoch, especially at the courts of the Medici, Borgia and d' Este. Cosimo de ' Medici (1389-1464) brought eight Bolognese to Brussels in order to give to the Belgian nobility. Philip II, King of Spain 1556-1598, received by the Duke d' Este two Bolognese as a gift. Description

Small companion dog with a stocky and compact body. Weight 2.5 to 4 kg at withers 25-30 cm. The length of the hull measured between the shoulder tip and the ischial tuberosity, corresponds to the height at the withers. Straight topline with high set tail that curves over the back cheerfully. His movement is free and energetic, easy prancing, while the head is carried classy and elegant. The hair is long from head to tail, from the back line to the feet all over, soft catching and curly in pure white. The head is slightly ovoid, nearly square skirt with black nose and large round eyes in deep black with black eye rims, not prominent, expressive. The ears are set high, long and drooping. The Bolognese is a dog of a delicate and fine physique, a popular and adaptable companion and family dog, very enterprising and docile. Since it requires only little spout, it is very well suited for a city apartment.

Nature

Bolognese are not active or nervous, yet spirited, and always in the mood of joyful nature to the game, therefore particularly suitable for families with children. They are affectionate and cuddly, but also very vigilant.
