The Bolonka Zwetna is not recognized by the FCI breed Bichon type, originating from Russia. It is recognized by the RKF, which represents Russia in the FCI and filed by this in FCI Group 9. Since February 2011, the breed is also recognized in Germany by the VDH. The German breeder of Bolonka Zwetna are organized in the Association of German small dog breeders.
More than a hundred years, the race was held exclusively in Russia and in the countries of the later Soviet Union. The breed is called in Russian Цветная болонка ( Zwetnaja Bolonka ), which means "colorful lapdog " ( Bolonka = lapdog and zwetnaja = colorful).
From a color variant of the Bolonka Franzuska own breed was developed in the Soviet Union. During the Bolonka Franzuska is white, there is the Bolonka Zwetna in many colors and color combinations except white.
From the mid- 1980s, the breed was popular in the GDR. International acquired neither the Bolonka Zwetna nor the Bolonka Franzuska recognition. The Bolonka Zwetna is recognized under the name Русская Цветная Болонка (Russian Bolonka Zwetna ) of the Russian Canine Federation RKF ( Российская Кинологичөская Фөдерация ).
