Bombay State

Bombay was an Indian State. It existed from 1947 until 1960.

History

With the Indian independence from the United Kingdom on August 15, 1947, the Bombay Presidency, since 1937 a regular province in British India was the state of Bombay. The area was supplemented in the following years by several princely states from the gujaratisprachigen area and the United States Deccan.

In implementation of the States Reorganisation Act Bombay learned on November 1, 1956 Significant remodeling and enlargement. The State of Hyderabad were divided Saurashtra, Kutch and the marathisprachigen part of Nagpur Division of Madhya Pradesh, and the Marathwada region. The southern parts of kannadasprachigen Bombay were affiliated to the Mysore State ( Karnataka since 1973 ).

After separatist movements gained strength, demanding both a gujaratisprachigen and a marathisprachigen State, Bombay was divided on May 1, 1960 in the new states of Gujarat and Maharashtra.
