Bon Iver

Bon Iver is an American folk or singer-songwriter project, whose main character of the singer, guitarist and organist Justin Vernon ( born April 30, 1981 in Eau Claire ) is. The name Bon Iver is derived from the French bon hiver "( " good winter "). Bon Iver is best known for the 2007 album released For Emma, Forever Ago, Vernon has recorded alone in a hunting lodge in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. 2009 was followed by the EP Blood Bank. 2011 appeared the second studio album Bon Iver, Bon Iver, which received the award for Best Alternative Album at the 54th Grammy Awards in 2012. In addition, Bon Iver was honored as best new artist.

Style

The melancholic songs by Bon Iver are very simply structured, mostly consisting of a few, subtle guitar chords. The singer switches between emotional breast and high head voice. In the studio, Vernon plays all instruments himself. He was first live accompanied by three other musicians, Mike Noyce, Sean Carey, and Matthew McCaughan. For the songs from his second album Bon Iver, Bon Iver, he enlarged his stage crew on nearly a dozen musicians, including brass and additional guitarist.

For Emma, Forever Ago (2008)

End of 2007, Vernon released his first album under the stage name Bon Iver on their own. A few hundreds of CDs circulating in local music stores, Wisconsin, Vernon before the beginning of 2008 an offer from the independent label Jagjaguwar was that wanted the album out to a larger audience. So Vernon was finally first at Jagjaguwar, later taken on 4AD Records. To the making of the album entwines itself a legend, as many music sites and magazines different versions with partially wrong contents narrated in their record reviews. Numerous statements Vernon, who can not really understand the myth of the origins of from leaves, remove that many sporadic events have gone into the design and motivation for the album. So Vernon calls the album the final point of an episode, at the beginning of his former band DeYarmond Edison stands. The band, whose lead singer was Vernon, was born in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and moved on in search of a major city and a wider audience in 2005 to North Carolina. There Vernon experienced an eventful time, although he says, looking back, he had all the time is not felt in the right place. Beginning of 2007, then his band broke up, the remaining band members founded the freak folk trio Megafaun, while Vernon split from his girlfriend, fell ill with a liver infection and pneumonia and moved back to Eau Claire. There he moved after he had lost his job activity, the hunting lodge of his father in Fall Creek, Eau Claire. Three months in the winter of 2007, he remained there. In the first weeks after and during his recovery from the infection he did in his own words nothing else but to drink beer and watch DVDs. But at some point he took out of boredom his guitar and a little equipment out of the trunk. For this equipment belonged among other things, a Gibson Les Paul Goldtop and a Shure SM57, the only microphone that he used for the complete recordings of " For Emma ". On the Internet, he found an old resonator guitar on eBay. He contacted the owner and it turned out that the guitar was owned by an old woman, whose husband was a famous folk guitarist in Nashville before he passed away. Vernon bought the guitar and it became the focal point of the most popular songs of the album, " Skinny Love". To date, Vernon plays this song last of all on that resonator guitar at his concerts. After Vernon he wanted to prove only the songs that he wrote at that time that he could sit down again to create for themselves something nice. He slowly began to incorporate past memories in the lyrics and atmosphere. In the end, he enrolled in all the suffering of the soul, his last years have prepared for him, and dedicated it to "Emma". The frequently encountered assumption here if it were only to Vernon's ex-girlfriend Sarah Emma Jensen is in the negative. Rather, Emma is such a thing as " a place where many formerly loved people meet ". A special musical feature of Vernon, his distinctive falsetto vocals, was also " justified " on that album. Previously Vernon had " this thing a little playing around ... I ( Vernon ) but nowhere really knew how exactly do I make it so it sounds good." While some passages were included with the enigmatic falsetto on the album " Hazelton ", which published Vernon still under his own name, sting songs on Bon Iver 's " For Emma " out especially in the excessive use that very vocal technique. Vernon said in interviews that Flume was the one song on the album, which he still feel the greatest emotional connection today. Among other songs, he has developed a strange relationship. To Re: Stacks, the regular end of the album ( there's a hidden track " Wisconsin " ), he said it felt weird to play this song, because with this he tell the audience something, and that was the song permanently (he played over 100 concerts) taking the magic.

Bon Iver Day

In July 2011, took the mayor of Milwaukee, Tom Barrett, the beginning of Bon Ivers world tour as an opportunity, July 22 the official "Bon Iver Day" to make the city. Reasons for this were the international success of both the band's albums, coupled with a deep rootedness of those with Justin Vernon's home state of Wisconsin. Shortly thereafter appointed by the Mayor of Vernon's hometown December 13, also at the official "Bon Iver Day".
