The drawbar either refers to the union of the front and rear Rhine near the village down, or to the bifurcation of the traffic to the various Alpine passes. The star refers to the patron saint of the parish church: Saint Anne or Mary.

Geography

The municipality is located on a plateau above the confluence of the Rhine front ( at the output of the Rhine Gorge ) and background Rhine, which is caused by a massive natural disaster, the Flims landslide. The village lies in the valley Bonaduz to 662 m, the depth level to around 590 m and the mountains about 1,500 m ( Alp Sut ).

The municipal area of Bonaduz lie the ruins of the castle Wackenau.

A part of the municipality extends to the Safiental, the hamlet Scardanal and the Alp Sut.

Population

Bonaduz grew after an initial growth period 1850-1860 and a second growth phase from 1900 to 1960 steadily ( 1850-1960 doubling of the population ). Between 1960 and 1980 there was a strong growth, which has since increased further ( from 1960 to 1980: 37 % from 1980 to 2005: 73%). Since the 1960s, there was a large wave of immigration from abroad.

Languages

Until the mid-19th century the entire population spoke a bündner Romanesque dialect. Although this was a mittelbündnerische dialect, the Sursilvan was used as a written language traditionally in all municipalities of the district Imboden. In this capacity, they resembled the communities Berguen Filisur where also mittelbündnischere dialects were in use and are, as a written language but the Oberengadinische (where, historically, mainly for religious reasons) was in use.

Already in the 19th century, the Romanesque lost more and more important. Gifts in 1880 75 % of residents Romansh as their native language, it was in 1900 merely 55%. Within a decade, was the language change and the decline of the Roman (1910: 29% and 1941: 15%). By 1970 the language situation stabilized. Since then, the strong growth in the German-speaking ensures a steady decrease in the proportion of Romanesque.

Originally dominant Romansh was banned in the 19th century from school and church. Today, German is the sole vernacular.

Origin and nationality

Of the 2737 residents of the end of 2008, 90% were Swiss nationals.
