The headwaters of the river is located southeast of Norton Sound on the eastern flank of the Nulato Hills. It flows southeast and empties in the Slough Bonasila at the level of Elkhorn Iceland, about 40 km north- west of the settlement of Holy Cross, in the Yukon River.

The river's name is probably of " buena silla " ( " good fit " ), an old Spanish term for the region is derived, and was first documented in 1916 by RH Sargent from the United States Geological Survey.
