Bongo Maffin
Bongo Maffin is one of the most famous kwaito bands in South Africa.
The group was founded in 1996 on the initiative of the DJ Oscar. There were also Appleseed from Zimbabwe, who brought the reggae influence, and stoan, who had previously sung at the kwaito band Thebe. 1997 Red ( Thandiswa Mazwai ), after they had previously worked as a background singer and recording artist, a permanent member of Bongo Maffin.
The lyrics of their songs tell about daily life of the young generation of South Africa, from Love in the Time of AIDS, the longing for the spiritual African roots and the need for African self- consciousness.
On November 29, 2003 Bongo Maffin occurred at the 46664 charity concert for the fight against AIDS. International attention the band received through collaborations with musicians such as Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan and Skunk Anansie. Since November 2004 there has been repeated joint appearances with the Berlin Ragga band Seeed.
