Bonhill

Bonhill is a small town in the Scottish unitary authority in West Dunbartonshire. It is located in the agglomeration Vale of Leven on the east bank of the Leven opposite of Alexandria. In the north of Balloch is adjacent to three kilometers to the south is Dumbarton.

History

The Parish Bonhill was first mentioned in 1270 as Buthehille. In the following centuries the rural area developed only slowly. Bonhill is the oldest parish in the Vale of Leven, still relatively young. Since the mid-17th century Viehändler used the ford in Leven for river crossing. At the beginning of the 18th century there was a church; a predecessor of today's parish church. Like many communities in the area Bonhill developed with the textile industry. The Dalmonach Works were founded there in 1786. In the 1840s, four textile factory in Bonhill were already established. 1836 toll bridge over Leven was built. Another phase of growth the city experienced in the 1970s, as a result of the overpopulation of Glasgow living room was created in the surrounding areas. In 2001, there were 9547 people in Bonhill.

Traffic

Bonhill is located just off the A813. The running along the western bank of the Clyde A82, which connects Glasgow and Fort William with Inverness, the city connects to the trunk road network. From Balloch the A811 leads to Stirling. Mid-19th century Alexandria received its own railway station, which was served on the Caledonian and Dunbartonshire Junction Railway North British Railway between bowling and Balloch. Today there keep the trains of the North Clyde Line, which go over Glasgow partly to Edinburgh. Bonhill itself has no railway station. The nearest airport is around 15 km away, Glasgow Airport.

Attractions

In Bonhill there are two monuments from the highest Scottish monument category A. Dating from the early 18th century manor house Strathleven House was for William Cochrane, 3rd Earl of Dundonald built. The design was provided by the famous architect James Smith. In the second monument is the dovecote, which can be found in the spacious park.
