Boniface II, Margrave of Tuscany

Boniface II of Lucca ( * 788, † 847; Italian Bonifacio ) was from 828-834 marquis of Tuscia ( Tuscia ) and prefect of Corsica.

Life

Birth and year of death of Boniface are not regarded as fully secured: as the birth year is given also the year 800, when death year 846

The origins of the house Boniface were in Bavaria. Boniface II was the son of Boniface I of Lucca and followed this as Count of Lucca to. Lothar I, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Italy appointed Boniface in 828 to the Margrave of Tuscany (Italian Toscana) and prefect of Corsica, which he successfully defended in the year 833 against the attacks of the Saracens. The city at the southern tip of Corsica Calcosalto took in his honor then his name Bonifacio ( Corsican: Bunifaziu ).

After Boniface introduced in the year 833 on the side of the Emperor Louis I, the successor of Charlemagne, he was deposed by his son Lothar I. Margrave of Tuscia. Boniface continued in the following year for the release of Empress Judith one, fell out thereby further with Lothar I and had to go into exile. The 836-838 years he spent in Germany, his later years in France.
