Bonn-Cologne Graduate School of Physics and Astronomy

The Bonn- Cologne Graduate School of Physics and Astronomy ( BCGS ) is a collaboration between the Universities of Bonn and Cologne can reach the master's and doctoral degrees in physics students. Since 2007, the BCGS is supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft ( DFG) within the Excellence Initiative.

Study

The BCGS takes good students from all over the world after the completion of the bachelor's program. Following the Anglo-Saxon studies already at the beginning of the study in the BCGS is the intention to move as seamlessly as possible according to the master to doctoral studies.

The declared aim of BCGS is both early involvement of students in research (early on research ) before the beginning of the thesis as well as the persistence of learning during the research doctorate (continued learning). Here, students are cared for from the beginning the master's program at each of a mentor to the participating universities.

Courses

As part of the BCGS events in Cologne and Bonn can be visited by the students. To facilitate this, some events will be broadcast as a video conference, others are held alternately at both study sites.

In addition, several intense weeks of each semester are offered that deal outside of the lecture period a week throughout the day with a theme.

Regular events

During the academic year, the BCGS aligns some solid events that take place usually alternately in Bonn and Cologne.

At the opening event in the fall of the newly recorded for the winter semester students are welcomed. A guest speaker will give a presentation on a current topic of physics - in the past were Michael Berry and Walter Kutschera.

In the spring set at a poster session the senior students of their research activities and results on posters before. Besides suggestions to the posters these events offers younger students an overview of the current research topics at both universities.

Under the title Science meets Business makes every summer a physicist about his - before career outside the university - often unusual.
