Province

Bonthe is a city in Sierra Leone. It is the capital of the district is located in Bonthe and Chiefdom Sittia in the Southern Province.

The city is located in the east of Sherbro Island, on the Atlantic coast. It is located about 140 kilometers south-southeast of the provincial capital Freetown.

History

The town was founded in the 19th century by freed slaves. Before the Americans went to Monrovia in the neighboring Liberia, the island of Sherbro was a possible settlement place for African-American returnees. To avoid trouble with the British, the idea was dropped.

Population

The population belongs mainly to the people of Bullom - Sherbro. There are also numerous Creoles. The population stagnated 1963-1974 (growth from 6230 to 6398 inhabitants). Since then it grows. 1985 were counted 7210 and 2004, 9740 inhabitants.

Economy and infrastructure
