The book of Zephaniah Zephaniah or part of the Twelve Prophets ( the Minor ) of the Tanakh or Old Testament. In the Septuagint and the Vulgate reads Sophonias.

Origin and Meaning

The name " Zephaniah " ( צְפַנְיָה şəfanjāh ) is the shortened version of the name form " Zefanjahu " ( צְפַנְיָהוּ şəfanjāhû ) and means gratitude Name " YHWH ( protectively ) salvaged / hidden ".

Author

From the author except his name Zephaniah and his ancestors for four generations, nothing certain is known. In the great- great-grandfather Hezekiah, it could be either the Israeli King Hezekiah - that is temporally possible, but not provable. But it would explain why, was different than usual standard practice, called not only the father. Since he is called " son of the Ethiopian ", one can assume that he was a stranger and came from another country.

After 1.4 ( "this site" ) and the detailed descriptions of the place, he must have been a resident of Jerusalem or has certainly worked there.

Dating

According to 1.1 Zephaniah received his messages at the time of the Jewish King Josiah ( 639 BC -609 BC). In content the prophecies before Josiah's reform of the cult originated in the year 622 BC and before the destruction of Nineveh in 612 BC

Thus, Zephaniah is to be settled in time between Nahum and Habakkuk.
