Boozoo Chavis

Boozoo Chavis (born 23 October 1930 in Lake Charles, Louisiana; † 5 May 2001, Austin, Texas), actually Wilson Anthony Chavis, was an American pioneer of Zydeco music, the "King of Zydeco " ( King of Zydeco ). He had in 1954 with Paper in My Shoe the first zydeco hit. Because of its unusual presentation with a white Stetson he was also known as the " Creole Cowboy" ( Creole Cowboy ).

Biography

Chavis ' mother bred among other things, ponies and performed a dance club where Chavis ' father played accordion, often accompanied by Morris "Big" Chenier and his nephew Clifton. Chavis taught himself the accordion playing at and soon gained local popularity. Producer Eddie Shuler invited him to recordings in which paper was in My Shoe. The single was a surprising hit.

However, a second hit came. In 1964 Chavis with Jo -el Sonnier and Little Brother Griffin in the presence of Blue researcher Mike Leadbitter 16 pieces on, but only one single was released. After that Chavis retired for two decades in the music business and bred ponies. He made music only in the private sphere.

1984 Chavis had a comeback. He brought out a series of highly regarded albums and appeared on the big folk festivals, including the Newport Folk Festival and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. An appearance of Chavis is seen in the video documentary " The Kingdom of Zydeco " by 1994. 1998 he was inducted into the " Zydeco Hall of Fame".

Boozoo Chavis died in 2001 during a tour after a heart attack and a subsequent stroke.
