Borgo Maggiore

Borgo Maggiore is a comune ( Italian Comune, sanmarinesisch Castello) of San Marino.

Geography

It has 6.609 inhabitants and an area of 9.01 km ².

Borgo Maggiore is bordered by the municipalities of San Marino San Marino Serravalle, Domagnano, Faetano, Fiorentino, San Marino, Acquaviva and the Italian community Verucchio (Province of Rimini).

Among the districts (Italian Frazione, sanmarinesich Curazie ) include Cà melon (360 meters altitude), Cà Rigo (148 m), Cailungo (360 m), San Giovanni sotto le penne (460 m), Valdragone ( 466 m) and Ventoso (360 m).

The main town of the municipality is the second largest city in the country, after the metropolitan center Dogana, in the municipality of Serravalle, and lies at the foot of Mount Titano.

History

Once the place was called Mercatale ( market town ) and is still one of the most important market places in the Republic remained. The first documented market in the town took place in 1243. At the end of the 13th century took place even with the stand-alone communities Cailungo and San Giovanni sotto le Penne part in the ten Gualdarie of San Marino. 1879 the town was renamed in Borgo Maggiore. Today, as in centuries past, Borgo Maggiore is an important connection location in the republic.

Attractions

In the center of the main town, the Piazza is Grande ( main square ), where every Thursday the traditional market is held.

The modern Santuario della Beata Vergine of Consolation (English Sanctuary of our blessed lady of consolation ), which was designed by Giacomo Michelucci in 1958 is located at the motorway exit Borgo Maggiore.

Traffic

A cable car takes you from the place Mount Titano up to the capital, San Marino. Borgo Maggiore features in the form of a helipad on the single airfield of the Republic.

Sports

Borgo Maggiore is represented with the teams SP Cailungo, AC Libertas and SS San Giovanni in the league Campionato Sammarinese di Calcio.
