Boris Mayorov

Boris Aleksandrovich Mayorov (Russian Борис Александрович Майоров; born February 11, 1938 in Moscow, Russian SFSR ) is a former Russian ice hockey player and national team of the Soviet national ice hockey team. After end of his career he worked as a hockey coach and functionary as well as a sports commentator. He is the twin brother of Yevgeny Mayorov, who was also a hockey player.

Career

Boris Mayorov began his career with his brother Yevgeni at Spartak Moscow. During the 1955/56 season he made his debut in the Klass A for the club, where he remained until his career end. In 1962 he was appointed captain and held this office with a break until 1968. In 1961 he also completed two football games for Spartak. Throughout his career he has been three times with Spartak Soviet champion -. 1962, 1967 and 1969 and has been recognized in 1965, 1966 and 1968 runner-up. In 1967 he reached the final of the Soviet Spartak Cup competition. Overall, he completed his career up to the end of 1969 400 games in the Klass A, in which he scored 255 goals.

International (1960-1969)

In November 1960 Boris Mayorov was appointed for the first time in the Soviet national ice hockey team, and was nominated in four international matches for the World Cup 1961. In this he was appointed with seven goals and nine assists tournament top scorer and in the All-Star team, while he won the bronze medal with his team. Until 1968 he took part each year in the World Championship and the Olympic Winter Games in 1964 and 1968, where he at any of these tournaments, won the gold medal with the Soviet Unions.

In the National Team as well as Spartak Moscow he played together for many years with his brother Vyacheslav and Yevgeny Starschinow. His last international game, he completed on 8 March 1969 for Finland. In a total of 134 international matches of his career Mayorov scored 63 goals.

Coaches and officials (from 1969)

Shortly after retiring from competitive sports, he became head coach of Spartak Moscow, after he had been in charge of the club from July to October 1967 as a player-coach. By May 1971, he remained at the head coaching position. He reached 1970, the vice-championship with Spartak and has twice won the USSR Cup competition with the club. Between 1971 and 1972 he was head coach of the junior national team of the Soviet Union. After that, he was until 1973 coach of the B team of his home country.

Between 1974 and 1976 he was responsible for Jokerit Helsinki as head coach. In 1976 he returned to the Soviet Union and was part of the coaching staff at the first Canada Cup. He was also at this time team captain of the national team. Between 1977 and 1979 he was head coach of the so-called Soviet All-Stars, who attended as a guest team in the World Hockey Association.

On 6 August 1979 he was appointed Chief Executive of Hockey Sports Committee of the USSR and held this position until March 14, 1983.

In 1985 he returned to the coaching job at Spartak Moscow back and won with the club the Spengler Cup in 1985. Until 1991 he was also Chairman of the Ice Hockey Federation of the Russian SFSR. Between November 1991 and May 1993 he was again head coach at Jokerit Helsinki and won with the club in 1992, the Finnish Championship. For the 1993/94 season he was engaged by Tappara Tampere.

Between 1995 and 1998 he worked as general manager of the Russian national ice hockey team. Since 1998, he has also worked as a hockey commentator for the Russian television station NTV Plus. In July 1998, he was elected as president of the HK Spartak Moscow and held this office until November 2002. Since June 25, 2001 Mayorov is vice president of the Russian Ice Hockey Federation. Since 18 March 2010, he assisted the coaching staff of the Russian national ice hockey team as a consultant.
