His greatest achievement was winning the giant slalom bronze medal at the World Ski Championships 1982 in Schladming, behind Steve Mahre and Ingemar Stenmark. In 1980 he was at the Olympic Games in Lake Placid eighth in the giant slalom, four years later in Sarajevo fifth in the same discipline. Earlier in his career he had won at the Junior European Championships 1977 in Kranjska Gora the gold medal in the giant slalom.
In Skiweltcup Strel won a giant slalom on December 15, 1981 in Cortina d' Ampezzo. Another podium place he reached on January 26, 1981 in the giant slalom in Adelboden. There are also 21 other rankings in the top ten.
