Borland Database Engine

The Borland Database Engine ( shortly BDE) is a universal interface to access a relational database that was developed by Borland for Windows systems. It provides access to desktop databases such as Paradox, dBASE / FoxPro and Microsoft Access; continue the SQL Links are integrated, which allow access to most SQL Server database systems such as DB2, Informix, Interbase, MS SQL Server, Oracle and Sybase natively. Any database which have an ODBC driver may be addressed via this.

Apart from the development environment and Visual Paradox dBase BDE was also used by Borland Delphi and C Builder as an abstraction layer for uniform access to different databases from corresponding applications out.

Supported Database Formats

A distinction is made between two types of access or drivers: Native and ODBC.

Native Driver

Native Driver in version 5.2.0.2:

  • Paradox
  • IBM DB2
  • DBASE
  • Microsoft Foxpro
  • Informix
  • InterBase
  • Microsoft Access
  • Microsoft SQL Server
  • Oracle
  • Sybase

ODBC

Using ODBC, all databases are accessible, are available for the ODBC driver and installed on the appropriate system.

Current status

The latest version of the BDE is version 5.2. Most drivers contained therein are labeled as version 5.2.0.2 and carry a file date of 10 May 2001 (11:00 clock ). The BDE is no longer developed since this version. Existing projects can be ported to other database interfaces such as Zeos.
