Borne, Ardèche

Borne is a commune with 39 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the far west of the Ardèche. The inhabitants are called Bourniquels and Bourniquelles.

Geography

The municipality is located in a sparsely populated upland valley of the river Borne, a tributary of the Chassezac, who was also the namesake of the village. Surrounded, the location of the mountains of the Cevennes, a part of the Massif Central, such as the Col de la Croix de Bauzon, the Col de Meyrand and the Col du Misc Borne is part of the Regional Natural Park of Monts d' Ardèche. The nearest towns are Langogne in the Lozere department 29 km air line and Aubenas 51 km away.

History

The place Borne was first mentioned in 1152, when Guillaume, the lord of the community, the later Cistercian abbey founded Les Chambon near the hamlet of Les Chambon. The monks should cultivate the barren and infertile land and grow food. In the 14th and 16th centuries, during the religious wars, and during the French Revolution, the abbey but was repeatedly plundered and devastated. The blocks were then sold or used for other buildings. Subsequently, a part of that church was incorporated into the neighbor municipality Montselgues. The remaining territory was liberated after a short occupation.

Attractions

Borne is a picturesque village in the Cevennes and the starting point of many hiking trails in the area.
