Borne, Overijssel

Borne ( Low Saxon: Boorn ) is a municipality in the province of Overijssel in the Netherlands. It has 21,772 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 predominantly Catholic or no religion ). The municipality consists of the main town of Borne and the small villages Hertme and Zenderen. Bornerbroek belongs since 2001 to the neighboring city of Almelo.

Location and economic

Borne is located in the Twente region, on the railway line between Hengelo and Almelo. The A1 motorway Amsterdam - Hengelo - Rheine - Osnabrück - Berlin runs along the town. Since 1983, a partnership with the city of Rheine. Borne has some industry, mostly small businesses. Many residents commute daily to work in the neighboring towns. The scenic surroundings as well as the church and a few houses from the 18th century to attract tourists, especially for cycling.

History

Borne was first mentioned in 1206 and was called in the Middle Ages " Burgandy ". It was a poor Lower Saxon farming village in the Netherlands to 1828 Salomon J. Spanjaard founded one of the many textile factories in the area here. Especially towels branded Spanjaard were known nationwide. Almost all men from Borne worked in the 1920s at Spanjaard. The company, which had to work during the Second World War as a " Jewish enterprise " temporarily under a Nazi administrator was no longer able later to Asian competition and had to cease operations in 1973.
