Borough of Harrogate

Harrogate [ hærəgət ] is an administrative district with the status of a borough in the county of North Yorkshire in England. Administrative center is the city of Harrogate. Other important towns are Boroughbridge, Knaresborough, Pateley Bridge, Ripon and Wath -upon- Dearne.

The district was formed on 1 April 1974 and evolved from a fusion of different authorities of two administrative counties: In the North Riding of Yorkshire, these were the Urban Districts Masham and Wath and part of Thirsk Rural District; in the West Riding of Yorkshire were the Borough of Harrogate, the City of Ripon, the Knaresborough Urban District, the Rural Districts Nidderdale and Ripon and Pateley Bridge Rural District and parts of Wetherby and Wharfedale.

On 1 April 1996 the following villages were separated and the Unitary Authority of the newly formed city of York added: Nether Poppleton, Upper Poppleton, Hessay and Rufforth.
