Borovo Treasure

The Treasure of Borowo ( Bulgarian Боровско съкровище ) is a Thracian silver treasure, discovered near the northern Bulgarian Borowo. The treasure is kept in the History Museum in Rousse.

The Treasure of Borowo was accidentally discovered in 1974 in a Thracian Hügelnekropole. It consists of five vessels of silver, in which parts are gold plated, which form a luxurious drinking set. Three of them are drinking horns ( rhytons ), which end in protomes of horse, bull and Sphinx. The fourth vessel is a large two -handled cup, in whose central medallion a deer is attacked by a griffin, is shown. On the fifth vessel, a jug, the mysteries of Dionysos in relief are given. Thematically, the whole set is held together by the Efeurankenschmuck on two of the vessels, and through the various scenes that are related to each other.

On three of the vessels is the Greek inscription ΚΟΤΥΟΣ ΕΤ ΒΕΟΥ. This is read either as the name of a goldsmith Etbeos who has made ​​these pieces for Cotys and whose name was assigned to two other Phialen from Thrace, or as Cotys from ( the city) mynah.
