Borsec

Borsec ( German Bad Borseck, Hungarian Borszék ) is a town and a village in Harghita County in Romania.

Geographical location

Borsec is in the Székely Land, in eastern Transylvania in Giurgeu Mountains, a part of the Eastern Carpathians. The county town of Miercurea Ciuc is situated about 70 km south.

History

Probably since the late Middle Ages, the springing in the region of the present town mineral waters were known. The region was in the 18th century on the territory of the Military Frontier, which should protect the southeastern flank of the Empire of Austria against the Ottoman Empire. Between 1762 and 1764 the first buildings were constructed for the treatment of patients. Already in the 1770s the first scientific papers on the composition of the Borsecker mineral waters were written. 1804 was the Günther Hofkriegskonzipist Johann Valentin a concession to sell the water. 1819/1820 a route was built in the place. Since 1822, the mineral water was brought to Vienna, which increased the reputation of the place.

In the second half of the 19th century, the cure has been further extended. At the World Exhibition in Vienna in 1873, the water was honored with the title " Queen of the mineral water".

Until 1918, the village belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary, the Principality of Transylvania and Austria- Hungary. After the First World War he came to Romania, from 1940 to 1944 as a result of the Second Vienna Award temporarily back to Hungary. 1956 Borsec was declared a city.

After the Second World War was a further development of the tourism infrastructure. The economic difficulties of the country, however, led to a partial decline of the spa.

The main economic activities are tourism and still mineral water production.

Population

1850 lived on the territory of today's 320 people, including 144 Hungarians, 104 Jews and 67 German and Romanian. By 1880 the number of inhabitants had risen to 1,116. As of the 2002 census lived in Borsec 2,864 inhabitants, including 2,240 Hungarians, 607 Romanians and 14 Roma.

Traffic

Borsec has no rail connection. A leading after Topliţa narrow gauge railway is now closed. Regular bus services Miercurea Ciuc and according to Bucharest.
