Borsele

Borsele ( listen? / I ) is a municipality in Zuid- Beveland, in the Dutch province of Zeeland, on the north bank of the Westerschelde. The community had on 1 January 2013 as declared by the CBS 22,689 inhabitants and has an area of ​​194.42 km ², of which 52.39 km ² water surface. The name of the village is written with a single "s" and should not be confused with the district Borssele, which is written with ( dual ) "ss" and belongs to the municipality.

The municipality consists of the villages Baar country Borssele, Driewegen, Ellewoutsdijk, 's-Graveland polders, ' s-Heer Abtskerke, 's- Heerenhoek, Heinkenszand ( seat of the municipal administration), Hoedekenskerke, Kwadendamme, Lewedorp, Nieuwdorp, Nisse, Oudelande and Ovezande.

History

After floods in the 16th century, the polder area around the village Borssele was diked new in the following century and parceled out at right angles. The rectangular system of the old village Borssele was attributed to plans of the mathematician Simon Stevin from 1616, but is considered by recent studies Cornelis Soetwater as acting city planner.

Since March 2003 Borsele has a fixed connection to the other bank of the Scheldt: the Westerschelde tunnel connects Ellewoutsdijk with Terneuzen.

Economy

Between the village and the Borssele Vlissingener Sloehafens is a large industrial zone covers an aluminum factory and oil refinery. The community is known primarily for the location here on the bank of the Scheldt Borssele nuclear power plant, the only one in operation in the Netherlands.
