Boso of Merseburg

Boso († November 1 970 in Bavaria) was a Benedictine monk (OSB) and the first Bishop of Merseburg.

About Bosos birth is not known, except that he was originally from Bavaria. He was trained in the Regensburg Kathedralkloster St. Emmeram.

By order of Emperor Otto I. Boso missionary east of the Saale in the area of ​​the Sorbs. For this he was equipped by the ruler with plenty of ecclesiastical revenues. Because he knew the language of his mission area, he had success with the proclamation of the Christian message.

In Zeitz in a forest Boso was at a place he named after his name ( Buosenrod, 976 mentioned in a document ), a church built of stone. For the church, a Sorbian sacred grove was cleared.

Boso was consecrated in 968 by Adalbert of Magdeburg for the first Bishop of Merseburg. 970 he died and was buried in St. John's Church in Merseburg.

He was beatified, a memorial shall be 1 November or December 29th.
