Botanischer Garten Chemnitz

The Botanical Garden Chemnitz is located about 3 km north- west of the center of the city Chemnitz and shows there over an area of ​​12 hectares mainly Central European plant families and crops from around the world. In greenhouses are tropical plants to see Mediterranean plants and cacti and succulents. On the grounds there are further some animal enclosures, a Schulbiologiezentrum and a nature center.

Plant

In the open area in several central European habitats are replicated. So there are only 20 different forest communities. The heathland is represented with juniper, gorse and dwarf shrubs. Animals

The animal enclosures accommodate, among other ferrets, raccoons, sheep, goats and small rodents, but especially numerous bird species.

History

The garden was founded in 1898 according to plans of the garden director Otto Werner and the headmaster Paul Säurich. Originally, the area of the garden was only 1 ha; In 1933 it was extended by conditioning of an orchard on 1.75 acres. Built in 1938, the administration building is now used as an aquarium house. During the Second World War the garden was badly damaged; from the beginning of the 1950s, was rebuilt in 1955 renamed the " station Young Naturalists ". In 1975, a new administration building was built, which also houses classrooms. 1998 and 2002 was ever a new greenhouse.
