Botanischer Garten der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz

The Botanical Garden of Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz was created in the years 1946-1955 on a site that was previously an agricultural land with fruit trees and a military training ground. Today, the Botanical Garden is home outdoors and in greenhouses around 8500 species of plants from almost all regions of the world. Founder and first director of the Botanical Garden of Mainz was the botanist Wilhelm Troll ( 1897-1978 ). At installation of the garden he was supported by the Max Top ( 1895-1986 ).

For the first time the garden was extended by the construction of the first greenhouse in 1948, further extensions were the acquisition of two used greenhouses (1952 ), the construction of the today highest greenhouse, the so-called connector ( 1954), the addition of a replica of the Mainz Sand ( 1986, the site of the Garden since around 10 ha), the transformation of the Sukkulentenhauses (1997 ) and the construction of a new tropical house ( 1999).

Tasks of the Botanical Gardens

As part of the University of Mainz, the Botanical Garden of research and teaching as well as the conservation of biological diversity serves. In addition to his responsibilities include public relations and training, trainees to complete an apprenticeship as a gardener here ( floriculture ). The public is the garden for occasional cultural events and recreation. It found all year round regular or individual guided tours through the botanical gardens.

Since early 2010, the " Green School ", a new after-school learning center of the Department of Biology at the Johannes Gutenberg University is available for school classes. The training program is aimed at all ages and covers topics such as the importance of biological diversity, its conservation and sustainable use.

From time to time there are special exhibitions on botanical subjects such as " plants in the Bible," plant explorer or, as in the Darwin year, the evolution in the plant world.
