Botanischer Garten der Universität Duisburg-Essen

The Botanical Garden of the University of Duisburg- Essen is located as part of the former University - University of Essen in Essen's Ruettenscheid.

Character

The Botanical Garden has no public character, but primarily serves the growing plants as experimental and material provision for the Department of Botany at the University. Currently about 3,500 species are cultivated on approximately 1000 square meters of greenhouse space and 3,000 square meters of outdoor area. Furthermore, there are several key collections; noteworthy is beside the Mediterranean house and the spurge especially the Karnivorensammlung, which is one of the largest collections of its kind in Germany.

History

The garden was founded in the early 1980s by Guido Benno Feige, who was from 1980 to 2005 held the Chair of Botany / Plant Physiology at the University of Duisburg -Essen. On him the focus of the collection Mediterranean goes back. At the same time cowardly resignation of the sale of the site of the Botanical Garden and the move has been discussed on another site. Successor of fig is Martin salvation.

2010, the Botanical Garden of the University of Duisburg-Essen on the western edge of the Grugapark the city of Essen, was behind the Tropical House and the Mediterraneum, moved and officially opened in May 2012. Both gardens remain independent, but will cooperate together in the future. For this purpose, a teaching and a research greenhouse were built.
