The beginnings of the Botanical Gardens date back to Margrave Karl Wilhelm of Baden- Durlach ( 1679-1738 ). He let add between the two wings of the castle a " princely pleasure garden " with magnificent orangeries, gardens with flowers and glass houses, aviaries and caves. In 1800 Margrave Karl Friedrich the Lustgarten in front of the castle and the castle park in the English style convert. This means that the decision was made, to the west of the castle, to apply to the present place a new botanical garden. According to plans by Friedrich Weinbrenner the Grand Duke realized in 1808 a sizeable garden with orangery, hot, cold and growing houses and a corresponding free country. The buildings, however, were already damaged wood and after a short time. Grand Duke Friedrich I (1826-1907) therefore initiated in the 1850s a new building houses all plants according to the plans of the building director Heinrich Pretty. These buildings, partly equipped with an imposing iron structure, are still essentially preserved today. They hold plants, some of which impress by their rarity, partly by habit, colors or her age plant lovers. Even outdoors some rare trees and shrubs from the 19th century to see the mix with new plantings to a charming ensemble.
