Botanischer Garten Krefeld

The Botanical Garden Krefeld is located at the edge of the beautiful water parks in Krefeld's Bockum district, but in the district Oppum - Linn. Already in 1928, the Botanical Garden has developed out of a small school garden. Covering an area of 3.6 hectares and around 5,000 plant species grow in academic departments and theme gardens (as of 2008). Admission is free, except for special events.

Areas

In addition to native flora, visitors will find among other rare cacti, carnivorous plants, orchids, medicinal herbs, marsh and aquatic plants. Also, a rose garden, a rockery and a cottage garden is there.

Cacti

The cacti are housed in a large greenhouse, which until October is open to the public from May to first Sunday in each month. On these days are the members of the Krefeld cacti friends, who have provided from its own holdings available to the majority of plants, the visitors for questions about cacti and succulents available.

Niederrheinischer cottage garden

This garden area is managed as a school garden. Every week, come school classes and working groups of the nearby secondary school Schmiedestraße and edit the beds.

Pharmacist Garden

The aim of this area is to give visitors the topic " Phytotherapy - rational phytotherapy " them closer and to show a selection of medicinal plants, which are contained in teas and finished preparations. Around 100 plants, grouped by their application areas are planted in this garden theme. Signs provide information about names, origins and ingredients of each plant species. Information boards about the history of herbal medicine and the importance of proper dosage for therapeutic effect. In addition to a selection is presented to poisonous plants.

Rose Garden

There are some 3,000 climbing, shrub, flower beds and precious roses. A small wooden bridge leads to the Rhododendron area.

Events

Art of Eden

Every year on the first Saturday and Sunday of May, the art and design exhibition Art of Eden instead. This event, held in Darmstadt, is to provide a forum for art and design in nature. The domestic and foreign designers and artists are personally present and available for questions and discussions. The integral in the vast countryside of the botanical garden exhibits are also available for sale.

Plants ( exchange ) exchange-

In spring and autumn the plants ( immersion ) takes place publicly. Visitors can sell for a small fee or trade for other plants their surplus trees, shrubs, flowers, bulbs, seeds or herbs from our own garden.
