A botanical garden was first permanently after several attempts the creation failed, established at the University of Rostock in 1885 by Karl Ritter von Goebel. In the period 1935-1939 the 7.8 -acre outdoor area of the Botanical Garden at the Hamburg Street in the Hansa District was established by Arno Lehmann and Erich Rulsch.

In the botanical garden there are approximately 10,000 species of plants in culture. The maintenance and expansion is mainly ensured by seed and plant exchange with other botanical gardens. By 2009, the greenhouses were the botanical garden at the Doberan road still used in the original area, but were not in recent years because of the poor condition of the public. 2009, the new Loki Schmidt greenhouses were inaugurated on the premises at the Hamburg road.
