Botanischer Garten Wuppertal

The botanical garden in Wuppertal is a free, open garden or park with numerous domestic and partly exotic plants.

Location

The Wuppertal Botanical Garden is located in the city center on the western foothills of the parking area of Hardt. It lies at an altitude 195-220 meters above sea level and thus about 90 meters above the valley of the Wupper. The actual area of the garden has a length of about 230 meters and a width of 70 meters. On the site there are at least partially accessible buildings of Ellerschen villa with orangery, the Elise tower.

History

The botanical garden was created in 1890 as a school garden on the Hardt and relocated in 1910 due to lack of space on the nearby grounds of the Villa Ellerschen. Since December 1993, the Botanical Garden is maintained not only by the city of Wuppertal, but also supported by the newly founded "Association of Friends of the Botanical Garden Wuppertal ".

As part of the Local 2006 was built on the former site of the city nursery as an extension of the Botanical Garden three new greenhouses, a large demonstration greenhouse with approximately 400 m² and two smaller with around 100 m² of floor space.

The demonstration greenhouse on the south side is home to focus on tropical crops. The north side of the house with 250 sqm in the summer serves as an exhibition and event space, in the winter it is used for wintering plants. In the two smaller greenhouses are special collections of bulbs and tubers as well as cacti.

The entire system of the " New Garden Hardt " in an area of ​​3.6 ha was opened to the public on May 5, 2007.

Offers

During a guided tour through the garden botanical aspects and ecological interrelationships are explained. Plant consulting services throughout the year, on the 1st Wednesday of the month offered is readily accepted by many people seeking advice. In addition, there are activities for children and families, seminars, exhibitions, lectures and other events.

Approach

The best of the garden walk is reached by the leaders of the Hardt road and stairs compounds or with the inner-city minibus line 643, since the few is located standing nearby parking lots are overcrowded, especially in the summer months. In 2008, the park has been extended.
