Bottmingen from southwest

Bottmingen is located a moated castle in the municipality Bottmingen, south of Basel. The castle from the 13th century is one of the few preserved moated castles in Switzerland. First mention found it in 1363 as a possession of the eunuchs, an episcopal ministry noble family, which is considered as putative builder.

Despite the Baroque style of the medieval character primarily through the floor plan can be seen. In contrast to the water castles Hallwyl or Hagenwil the castle is missing a dungeon. This gives a relationship to the Burgundian- Savoyard castle type with a turreted square. John turned Deucher 1720 Bottmingen castle into a country residence of the French early Baroque, who remained almost completely intact. In addition to the exterior architecture is the staircase is evidence of this architectural style. Under Martin Wenk 1780 sat through the Rococo, which is shown on the precious Stuck in the Stone Hall. Wenk also left the southeast corner wear down to the courtyard level. He now serves as a garden terrace.

Today, the castle is used as Bottmingen restaurant and for banquets, weddings and other festive occasions.
