Bourganeuf

Bourganeuf ( Buorgon Nuòu in Occitan ) is a commune of the department of Creuse in the Limousin region with 2830 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011).

Bourganeuf owes its existence to the Knights of St. John. It was the capital of the " Langue d' Auvergne ", one of the eight provinces of the Order until 1750, when it was replaced by Lyon.

Geography

History

Bourganeuf was founded in the 12th century as a Commandery of the Knights. This Commandery was then the headquarters of the Priory of Auvergne, which was relocated in 1750 to Lyon. Bourganeuf was the capital of the district of Bourganeuf 1790-1800 and the arrondissement Bourganeuf until 1926.
