Bouyei is the mother tongue of the China-based same - Bouyei people.
It is still spoken by about 78.6 % of the relatives. Bouyei belongs to the family of the Tai - Kadai languages and is a tonal language.
The Bouyei distribute primarily to the Guizhou Province. Two smaller Bouyei groups in Qiannan Autonomous County speak own special languages , both of which likewise belong to the Tai - Kadai languages, but as " Kam -Tai > Kam - Sui " are classified:
- Mak (莫家 话) over 10,000 speakers;
- Ai- Cham (戛 木 话also唉 查 么 语) less than 3,000 speakers.
All other Bouyei have fully assimilated to the Chinese.
Phonology and orthography
In the 1950s by linguists a Bouyei - written language based on the Latin alphabet and modeled on the official transcription for Chinese, Pinyin, created. The tones are expressed by additional consonant at the end of a syllable.
