Boves

Boves is a municipality with 9801 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Italian province of Cuneo (CN ), Region Piedmont.

Geography

Boves is part of the mountain community Comunità Montana della Bisalta. The municipality consists of the villages Castellar, Cerati, Fontanelle, Mellana, Rivoira, Roncaia, San Giacomo, San Mauro and Sant'Anna. The neighboring municipalities are Cuneo, Peveragno, Limone Piemonte, Vernante, Robilante, Roccavione and Borgo San Dalmazzo.

The village lies at an altitude of 542-2404 m above sea level. The municipality covers an area of 51 km ².

History

During the Second World War Boves was a place of the Italian resistance, so that after the armistice of Cassibile on September 19, 1943, a unit of 1st SS Panzer Division under Joachim Peiper occupied the place to find partisans. In the subsequent massacre soldiers set the village center with 350 houses on fire and killed many civilians. Similar incidents were repeated on 31 December 1943 and on 3 January 1944.
