Boyd Lee Dunlop

Boyd Lee Dunlop ( born June 20, 1926 in Winston- Salem, North Carolina, † December 26, 2013 in Buffalo ) was an American jazz pianist.

Career

Boyd Lee Dunlop was the older brother of jazz drummer Frankie Dunlop. He grew up in poverty in Buffalo's East Side and began self-taught to play the piano. He joined with 15 years in churches and in a nightclub, where he also heard Art Tatum. His main job was working in steel mills of Bethlehem Steel and on railway property in Buffalo. He starred in the 1940s and 1950s, only in two recording sessions, one under the direction of saxophonist Moe Koffman and another in 1948 with Big Jay McNeely 1953, in which the four songs 3 -D; Nervous, Man, Nervous; Rock Candy and Texas Turkey emerged. He stepped in Buffalo on a regular basis in the Colored Musicians Club. In December 2011, the photographer Brendan Bannon discovered him in a nursing home; Bannon produced it with Allen Farmelo first album Dunlop Boyd 's Blues, recorded in a trio with bassist Sabu Adeyola and drummer Virgil Day. It has been discussed among others by National Public Radio and in The New York Times. Shortly thereafter, he suffered a heart attack from which he, however, soon recovered and another album, The Lake Reflections solo grossed. In October 2012 Boyd Lee and Frankie Dunlop were incorporated into the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame.
