Action

The film shows 12 years in the life of the young Mason from Austin, from his beginnings in the school age of 6 until his admission to the College. Mason has many problems with his busy sister Samantha and his parents, who live in divorce. His single mother Olivia comes after the separation of Masons father again and again to the wrong men.

Background

Linklater initially planned only a film about childhood, but did not want to be confined to a phase in the process. Hence the idea to put a film over the entire childhood of a person was born. First Linklater convinced his long -time regular actor Ethan Hawke from the project. Shortly thereafter, Patricia Arquette was cast as the mother. The role of Mason occupied Linklater with the then six-year Ellar Coltrane. The role of Mason's sister Samantha occupied the director with his daughter Lorelei Linklater.

The financing of the project took over the New York film distributor IFC Films.

The 39 days of shooting were distributed relatively evenly over the 12 years, the crew always came together for three to four days of shooting per year. Then Linklater went with the editor Sandra Adair immediately at the intersections of each section, they then seamlessly anfügten to the already finished film parts.

The long gestation period also brought technical challenges. In 2002, the team began with the shooting of the film on 35 mm film, but was then increasingly replaced by digital production methods. Additional problems came with outdated equipment and steadily deteriorating quality of development studios.
