Brabantian dialect

Brabants ( Brabants: Braobans; Dutch: Brabants ) is a low Franconian dialect within the Netherlands. The modern standard Dutch is partly based on the Brabant dialects.

Brabantischer dialect region

Brabants is spoken in the Dutch province of North Brabant, the Belgian provinces of Antwerp, Flemish Brabant and Limburg - Brabant in the border areas of the province of Limburg. The dialects of Venlo and Venray are now attributed to political reasons, the Limburg, although they belong to the Brabant spoke from a historical perspective.

In the north- west of the Dutch province of North Brabant, mainly in and around Willemstad, a Dutch dialect is spoken. The spoken to Cuijk in the northeastern Dutch province dialect is associated with the Kleverländischen.

Subdialects

Because of the relatively large linguistic region of Brabant, it can be roughly divided into three subdialects:

  • West - Brabant, spoken in the area west of the river Donge; in the west of North Brabant (the area around the cities of Breda, Roosendaal and Bergen op Zoom ) and the north and west of the province of Antwerp in Belgium.
  • Oost- Brabant, spoken in the area east of the river Donge; in the central and eastern North Brabant (the area around the cities of Tilburg, Eindhoven, 's- Hertogenbosch and Helmond ), the eastern part of the province of Antwerp and the far west of the province of Limburg.
  • Zuid- Brabant, spoken in the province of Flemish Brabant and the south of Antwerp.

Dialect use in the Netherlands and Belgium

Approximately one- third of the population with Dutch speakers live in the Brabant dialect area. In the larger Dutch cities like Breda and Eindhoven, where many people speak Dutch dialects, Brabant dialects were dropped, while many people still speak the local dialect in rural areas. In Tilburg and 's- Hertogenbosch, however, speaks a large number of the inhabitants of the Brabant dialect.

In Belgium dialects are still a commonly spoken language. In the capital, Brussels French replaced the Dutch in the mid 20th century. Nevertheless, there are many cultural activities that use the old dialect. In addition, the use of Dutch in young Dutch-speaking families who move back from the suburbs into the old city center, revived.
