The town of Braintree is a town in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, USA. In the census in 2007 the population was 34 422. Braintree is located in the metropolitan area called Greater Boston, has connection to the Red Line of the public transport of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority and is a member of the Metropolitan Area Planning Commission 's South Shore Coalition.

Geography

Braintree is located in the northeastern United States and to the east of the state of Massachusetts, about 20 km south of Boston.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the area of the city is 37.6 km ², of which 36 km ² land and 1.6 km ² ( 4.34% ) water. The waters include the Pond Meadow Park and Sunset Lake.

History

The town of Braintree was founded in 1640 and named after the English town of Braintree. The city belongs to the land was later divided between the municipalities Randolph, Holbrook and Quincy as well as parts of Milton. The northern district of Braintree, which represents the main part of the city Quincy today, was the birthplace of U.S. President John Adams and John Quincy Adams, as well as the politician John Hancock and General Sylvanus Thayer, the "Father of West Point ".
