Bram Som

Bram Som ( born February 20, 1980 in Terborg ) is a Dutch athlete. He specializes on the shorter medium range between 400 and 1000 meters. Som is a seven-time Dutch champion and was founded in 2006 in Gothenburg European champion in the 800 meters.

His athletic career began as a 7- year-old at the athletics club Atletico'73 in Gendringen. Up to the age of 16 he was active in various disciplines, but then decided to specialize in the shorter medium range.

An initial moderate success, he landed in 1998 with the 5th place in the 800 meters at the World Junior Championships in Annecy. These services, he confirmed in the following years. He was at the European Championships in Munich sixth, seven months later at the World Indoor Championships 2003 Fifth 2002. On the other hand was disappointing his participation in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, where he finished fifth in the semifinals.

After an injury to the Achilles tendon, he played no competitions in 2005, he qualified by winning the Dutch Championship for the 2006 European Championships in Gothenburg. There he succeeded on the last day of the competition winning the title in the 800 meters of the biggest success of his career. His gold medal was the first for the Netherlands at the European Championships for 24 years. Soms victory was accompanied by a protest because he had briefly left the track in the scramble in the run. The jury rejected this objection from though.

Som is one of the rank of sergeant in the Dutch army and is a member of the competitive sports group of the army.
