Branisko-Tunnel

The Branisko Tunnel ( Tunel Slovak Branisko ) is a einröhriger tunnel in Eastern Slovakia between Levoča and Prešov, on the D1 motorway.

The tunnel is 4975 m long and leads through the Branisko Mountains between the villages Beharovce in the west and in the east Široké and replaced the state road I/18 through the Braniskopass. Construction began in May 1997 by two portals out with application of the new Austrian tunneling method after the digging of the tunnel exploration was underway since April 1996; a solemn punch on May 1, 1999. The tunnel was opened to traffic officially on 29 June 2003. The cost of the tunnel amounted to about 8 billion SKK ( about 265 million euros ).

Currently, the Branisko tunnel is the longest in Slovakia and is in semi- expansion. The roadway is 7.5 m wide between the curbs, the clear height is 4.5 m and there are six Notbuchten and 13 escape routes each with 360 m, which are connected to the escape tunnel. The speed limit is 80 km / h

The construction is repeatedly criticized due to the overpricing: alone in the delivery of technological equipment of the state paid 1.9 billion SKK instead of the planned 700 million SKK. In addition, the Manager of the then owners Slovenská správa to ciest have enriched through government contracts to with transfers to Swiss bank accounts.
