Brännö

Brännö is an island and a place ( tätort ) in the Swedish province of Västra Götaland County and the historic province of Västergötland in the municipality of Gothenburg. The island is located in the Kattegat in the southern part of the Gothenburg archipelago Gothenburg west before.

Location

The population of the island is about 700 people, but increases in summer due to holiday guests to up to 3,000 people.

The island has two boat docks. Rödsten on the east side of the island is of it, the more used. On the west side lies the pier Brännös Husvik. There is a ferry to Saltholmen on the mainland. The piers are connected by a two-kilometer paved road. As in the neighboring archipelago there are Brännö no private motor vehicle traffic. West of Brännö lies the uninhabited island Galterö, which can be reached via a small bridge and serves as pasture for sheep Brännös. To the east lie the island Rivö and Asperö. Brännö achieved in a north-south direction an extension of about three and a west-east direction of about two kilometers.

Unlike the neighboring islands Brännö has fertile soil, making agriculture is possible. Furthermore, there are forests, meadows and granite cliffs. On Brännö martens, hedgehogs and rabbits occur. The highest point is 45 meters.

History

Since Brännö immediately south lies the route to the more eastern harbor of Gothenburg, the island came to be of strategic importance. Even into the 18th century Brännö was repeatedly attacked by Danish troops. On Brännö agriculture was operated. In addition, the residents worked as a pilot and a publican. The fish played only a subordinate role.

In the 1920s resulted primarily near the pier Husvik villas of pilots. From the 1930s the holiday homes developed by Göteborgern.

Attractions and Events

The center consists of listed buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. Since 2004 there Brännö in a local museum.

In the summer months every Thursday dances to the music of the composer Lasse Dahlquist will take place on landing stage Husvik, who lived and died here on Brännö.

Economy and institutions

In Brännö is a food retail trade as well as with the Brännö Brännö Värdshus and the Bryggcafé even gastronomy. On Brännö is needed with Brännöl its own beer. Personalities

The Swedish composer, writer, singer and actor Lasse Dahlquist lived on Brännö and died here in 1979. His burial took place in the cemetery next to the church.

The German painter Otto Strützel (1855-1930) undertook after his wedding in 1886 made ​​his honeymoon to Brännö.
