The Braque du Bourbonnais ( Bourbonnais Pointer ) is recognized by the FCI French breed (FCI Group 7, Section 1.1, Standard No. 179).

Origin and History

A type with the appearance of this breed can be found in 1589 on a woodcut by Ulisse Aldrovandi: a stummelschwänziger, kurzrückiger dog with trout pattern. Aldrovandi calls him: Dog of Bourbonnais on quail hunting in the 19th century breeders tried to replicate it again from the existing all over Europe pointing dogs, which led almost to extinction by the end of this century. There have now been ticked Pointer and German Shorthair for stabilization.

In the 1930s, breeders tried to enforce a pale lilac color and a congenital short tail. This strict selection led to a threat of race: From 1963 to 1973, no entries were made in the French stud book.

1970, a group of breeders turned to Michel Comte, the task of ensuring the survival of the Bourbonnais pointing dog. The French Stud, who is responsible for the breed standard, now sees the future of the race confident.

Short Description

The Braque du Bourbonnais is medium in size with up to 57 cm.

The hair is fine, short and dense, on the back a little rough and sometimes a little longer. Two color varieties are grown: brown roan and orange roan. In brown coat with spotting, strongly speckled to mediocre, the nuances lie de vin ( wine red ) or lilas passé ( faded - lilac ) can occur. In tan spotting the shade fleur de arises pêcher (Peach Blossom ).

The ears of dogs are easily fitted over the eye line and up to the throat or something beyond them rich. They lie on the cheek. In some dogs, the tail is missing quite naturally (→ Brachyury ). The breed standard requires docking of tail, but the narrow limits set in the German animal protection regulations.

Nature

The Braque du Bourbonnais is balanced and highly trainable. When searching, she works with a high nose. At home, she is gentle and affectionate.
