Brasil (mythical island)

The Brasil island (Hy Brasil ) belongs to the so-called phantom islands which, though marked on maps from the Renaissance and the early modern period, but never existed.

Myth

The location of Brasil island was represented differently on different maps. Once she should lie to the west of Ireland, once much further south, another time off Newfoundland. The name is Gaelic and means place of peace and harmony. With the Brazil Brasil Island has nothing to do. The island was allegedly discovered by Celtic monks in the sixth century and became one of longing of Europeans, since according to the descriptions of all the plants monks wore flowers and all the trees, fruits and stones were gems. The legend of the island stressed that the island is completely surrounded by fog and would be visible on only one day in seven years. In 1674 Captain Jon Nisbet claimed that he had boarded the island. It was not until 1865, the island was removed from the atlases.
