Brasschaat is a municipality of Belgium in Greater Antwerp in the Flemish Region, with 37 301 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2012).

The center of Antwerp is located about 10 kilometers southwest of Brussels and 50 km south.

The nearest motorway junctions are located at Merksem and Sint-Job - in -'t - Goor on the A1 / E 19 In chapels are the next regional train station in Antwerp and also keep on regional express trains. Antwerp airport about 12 km south of the village is the nearest regional airport and the Brussels National Airport near the capital Brussels is an airport of international importance.

History

Given its strategic location to defend the port of Antwerp Brasschaat was an important military outpost in the First World War. Between 1937 and 1939 the system was strengthened and expanded with bunkers and tank traps. Built in 1912 Brasschaat Fort can be visited today. Many of the monuments existing now serve as dwelling bat colonies.

Brasschaat is known as a venue for international triathlon competitions, 27 June 2010 as a premium European Cup took place.

Brasschaat has partnerships with the Rhineland-Palatinate town of Bad Neuenahr- Ahrweiler and the Bolivian city of Tarija.
