Brassolis

Brassolis sophorae ♀

Brassolis is a butterfly genus of the tribe Brassolini in the family Nymphalidae ( Nymphalidae ), which is found exclusively in the Neotropics.

Features

The moths are very different from those of other genera Brassolini by their short, compressed body, the short palps and a relatively small head.

The caterpillars resemble those big cube Butterfly, they have a large head capsule without thorns, behind the tapers of the body. The dolls are bent round and are thus similar to Dynastor dolls, which in turn have resemblance to a snake's head.

The caterpillars live socially in cocoons and feed on palm plants. At coconut palms (Cocos nucifera) can occur as pests.

The distribution ranges from Guatemala to the Amazon basin, Brassolis Isthmia occurs as only one of the four species in Central America.
