The subunit of the Real is the centavo (100 centavos = 1 Real). The real was introduced after a period of high inflation in 1994 instead of Cruzeiro in Brazil. Its value was initially controlled by the Brazilian Central Bank, but is traded freely in the capital market since 1999.

History of Brazilian currency

The first Portuguese settlers in America used the Portuguese Real as payment. The first official money with the name Real, however, was introduced in 1654 and printed by the Dutch, during the occupation of the northeast of Brazil. In 1790, the Real to the official Brazilian currency was appointed. Six times the devalued by inflation currency was replaced by a higher-quality new currency 1942-1994:

A Real 1994 is so 2.750.000.000.000.000.000 (2.75 trillion ) old Réis worth.

In Brazil sparked 1994, the Real ( BRL ) prior Currency " Cruzeiro " from which in 1942 replaced the real used since 1690. Today 100 centavos are real. After several stages of hyperinflation and currency reforms of the real was introduced in 1994 with an initial value of 1 U.S. dollar. In January 1999, however, the country fell into a currency crisis, which led to a sharp devaluation of the real and then to a general economic crisis. Release of the currency was necessary. Inflation was brought by establishing a policy framework and economic reforms under control. According to the International Monetary Fund ( IMF), the inflation rate was 6.9 % in 2005 and 4.2 % in 2006. For 2007, the estimates amounted to 3.5 %.
